The Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts supports the arts through direct financial support for adjudicated projects; indirect support to artists through assistance in grant writing, advocacy to other grant-making agencies, portfolio development and career advice; as well as through our ongoing support to the arts community and beyond with awards, affiliations, and associations with important arts activities on PEI.
Our primary financial support to artists is through our major granting programs. All programs are administered by Council staff who arrange for assistance in preparing the applications prior to the posted deadlines, who organize the applications and assemble appropriate multi-disciplinary juries, and who oversee the adjudications themselves. Finally, the results are reviewed by the Board of Directors, along with a report on the adjudication, before final approval.
In addition, we welcome staff from the Department of Communities, Cultural Affairs, and Labour, who observe the adjudication proceeding and who can then attest to the province that our policies and methods were properly adhered to, providing our funder with assurances that funds are granted under the best, and fairest, possible circumstances.
While all artists who meet our eligibility requirements can apply to our programs, it is important to understand that these programs are not, generally, designed for the casual artist. They are highly, highly, competitive and require a high level of skill in presenting your artistic vision, and portfolio of work to date.
We strongly urge all prospective applicants to make an appointment with our Programs and Communications Officer, Laurie McBurney, prior to making an application.
